A transformation is needed on how the world manages ocean resources, and nowhere is this truer than for fisheries and aquaculture. Overfishing and poor management cost $50 billion a year in lost revenues. And fully 90 percent of fish stocks are overfished or fished at their biological limit. However, as the demand for sustainably caught seafood grows in major importing countries, such as the United States and European Union, we are seeing positive examples of improving fisheries management in major seafood producing regions, places like Peru, Chile, Indonesia, and others. Meaningful and lasting solutions will require a multipronged approach on both the supply and demand sides, including working directly with fishers, the seafood industry and all levels of government. Setting fisheries on a sustainable course will ensure the economic stability of coastal communities and the fishers that depend on the ocean for their livelihood.
