In 2011, sixteen of the 23 megacities worldwide were in coastal areas, and rapid development of coastal areas is projected to continue. This presents an opportunity for natural infrastructure to be integrated with engineered solutions, increasing our resilience against climate change while providing other services such as supporting biodiversity. Maria Damanaki, Global Managing Director for Oceans at The Nature Conservancy, describes how we can build coastal cities that balance the needs of humans with environmental health while reaping diverse benefits along the way.
